This is a large cabinet specimen with several long bladed crystals. The longest blade measures12cm. It is somewhat more green than the characteristic blue of Kyanite, which derives it's name from "kyanos" Greek for blue. Geologist use kyanite as an index mineral, which will indicate metamorphic rocks subjected to high pressures. It is polymorphous with the other two temperature-pressure index minerals sillimanite and andalusite.
