This specimen came out of the Willard Roberts collection, the author of Encyclopedia of Minerals and mineralogy professor at SD School of Mines. Roberts was educated in England and most likely obtained this piece in the mid 1940's when he stationed in England during the war. He spent much time at the museums in Europe.
As can be seen it is a polished specimen of a stalagmite from one of the caves around Matlock. This information is on the attached label from the Royal Museum at Matlock. Interesting and historic.
