Kaznakhtite in Stichtite

Kaznakhtite in Stichtite

6 x 4.5 x 2.3 cm - Sm Cabinet
Ni6Co2(CO3)(OH)16 - 4H2O (RRUFF)
Kaznakhtinskiy ultrabasic massif, Terekta Ridge, Altai Republic, Russia
carbonate , nickel

Kaznakhtite is a new mineral designated as IMA No. 2021-056. On this specimen it is a green grain of Kaznakhtit within Stitchite. It is a member of the Hydrotalcite supergroup and thus will be associated with similar species such as its matrix (Stitchite), Iowaite, Pyroaurite and Woodalite. These are hydroxides and carbonates of magnesium and iron some of which contain chromium and nickel, such as Kaznakhtite. The locality is Kaznakhtinskiy ultrabasic massif which is metamorphosed to serpentinites. I am told this was a very limited find and thus very rare.
