"Mariposa" habit Calcite crystals to 3cm. The Mariposa habit is formed by two generations of Calcite. The first is easily seen since it is coated with a thin veneer of brown iron oxide.  The first generation are scalenohedral crystals, and the second is an overgrowth which totally wraps around the first giving an appearance that of a snow-capped mounain range. The very tips of the crystals are sharp as a pin. The Mineralogical Record issue of "Santa Eulalia" describes these clusters. The specimen is in excellent condition and any serious collector of fine Mexican minerals should have one of these in their collection.
