This is strickly a locality specimen or representative piece from a Copper/Silver mine located 95 miles NW of Durango along the La Sal Creek near the Nyswonger Mesa on the far west side of Colorado. Mindat reports over 2200 feet of underground workings and a production of 1.8 million pounds of Copper and 425,000 ounces of Silver from ore veins in the La Plata sandstone. A one time sheet Copper could be found on the dumps (ref. previous Hampson update). The piece here is an example of the Copper ore, in this case Chalcocite (probably argentiferous) and associated Malachite. It was self-collected by Arnold Hampson in 1960.
