A slice of a larger mass of iron ore known as "pencil ore". This specimen is the compact fibrous and columnar, variety of Hematite characteristic of the Pre-Cambrian iron deposits of the Marquette Iron Range located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Hematite contains nearly 70% iron, and is a primary ore.
