A large, very nice specimen loaded with dozens of reddish brown crystals up to 6mm.

Monazite is a rare earth phosphate with up to 12% thorium oxide and the primary source of thorium. Thorium is thermally stable and insoluble and used in refractory applications including glass, optics, and ceramics. It is typically mined from off-shore placers mainly in Sri Lanka and India. Specimens with abundant Monaite in rock like this specimen are rare and hard to come, especially from this deposit. The deposit is geologically interesting with unusual characteristics and was published in the a 1961 American Mineralogist.
