Wohlerite from Tvedalen, Larvik, Vestfold, Norway

Wohlerite
            from Tvedalen, Larvik, Vestfold, Norway

This specimen is a good example of pegmatitic texture and minerals. It appears to be mostly of grey alkali feldspar - plagioclase (Ca & Na feldspars) with a vein of late stage hydrothermal activity which deposited the amphibole "Barkevikite", a defunct name. The yellow areas are the crystalline Wohlerite and was perhaps deposited during the late-stage phase of the vein. Wohlerite was one of the minerals discovered on the Island of Låven, a hot spot of mineralogical activity in the 1840's.
