Named for Gustav Seligmann, a German mineral collector. Found at its type locality at Binntal, Switzerland as a mineral in cavities within dolostone, but can be found at other locations including Austria, Norway, Greece, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Namibia, China, and in New South Wales, Australia.
