Colorado Plateau Minerals

The Colorado Plateau encompasses a large area of the southwest including Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. Many of these minerals are formed in roll front uranium deposits. They can be bright yellow or orange and beautiful to see under the microscope.

Type Locality 

Golden fibrous Fervanite crystals up to 4mm in length at random, but oriented groups in sandstone matrix. The original label does not mention a specific mine only the district of "Gypsum Valley". There are three occurences in the district tabulated or mapped on Mindat, which is the Sullivan Brothers claim, Truck Group, and the Yellow Jacket occurence". Clicking on the GeoNames there are around a dozen other mines.

A specimen of Kokinosite, a relatively new mineral published in 2014 by Dr. Anthony Kampf et al and originally found at the St. Jude mine, San Miguel County, Colorado. This specimen was collected by Joe Marty, one of the authors of the original publcation. Please note that this is a new locality for the mineral. The Kokinosite are the opaque orange 1-3mm groups consisting of 0.5-1mm crystals. Associated are darker, translucent crystals of Lasalite (last photo). This is an exceptional specimen of this rare mineral.

Glassy orange crystals with no discernable shapes. Lasalite is fairly rare and occurs at only eight localities all in the Colorado Plateau in Utah and Colorado. It was described by John Huges and others in 2008. Many of the localities were found by Joe Marty, a prolific field collector.
