London Pegmatite Specimens

Tuesday, 30 July 2024 01:00 PM

London wrote the book called "PEGMATITES". It is the most in-depth book on the geology and mineralogy of pegmatites to-date. This Special Edition will include specimens used as illustrations in London's book. If you like pegmatites do not miss this one!

The specimen has a sawed and polished side displaying the thin stringers of Scorzalite and the not so obvious Brazilianite and Kulanite. These secondary phosphates formed along cleavages and fractures in the Montebrasite. London published a paper in the American Mineralogist describing the geology and mineralogy of the White Picacho district lihium pegmatites. Click here to view this publication. White Picacho pegmatites have been studied more than any other pegmatites in Arizona. Both London and Jahns wrote numerous papers on these pegmatites.

Large specimen, sawed and polished on one side to show the replacement of primary Montebrasite by aluminum phosphates, namely Scorzalite, Kulanite, Crandallite, and Brazilianite. The Scorzalite is the blue and the other phosphates are not readly seen. They were probably identified by EDS or XRD. Montebrasite is an ore of lithium and chiefly a pegmatite mineral. Other primary lithium minerals at the White Picacho district are Spodumene and Lithiophilite.

This specimen is illustrated on page 60 of "Pegmatites".

Excellent example of the alteration of white Montebrasite by blue Scorzalite, Brazilianite and Kulanite. Note the outer "skin" of the specimen in the fourth and fifth photos. Montebrasite-Amblygonite typically alters to a brown Kaolinite and the specimen will have smooth rounded edges produced during the alteration process. The name "nodule" is given to the masses of Montebrasite-Amblygonite.
