Ferberite

on Quartz - #AH53361
Locality
Fourth of July mine, Gilpin Co., Colorado, United States
Formula
Fe2+WO4
Availability
Sold
Size
9 x 7 x 3 cm - Sm Cabinet

Doesn't look like much of a specimen. You really have to get this under the scope to appreciate it. The Ferberite form euhedral crystals to about 1mm. They are prismatic with rectangular, flat terminations. Most have paralleled crystals on the sides and some are splayed outward, while others are somewhat curved or bent from the center of the prism. All the white is a cover of tiny Quartz crystals.

Large specimen of Galena.  The specimen has interesting zones with oriented faces reflecting the light in the same direction. I don't know what causes this, perhaps pressure during formations, perhaps I am just seeing things.

Fabulous specimen with a good amount of Gold intimately associated with silvery Coloradoite. Some of the Gold shows wire development. There are three spots which show prismatic crystals of Krennerite. These have slightly different goldish color in the right light, and they also exhibit cleavage. Coloradoite does not have cleavage.

Vein Gold in a 10x8mm area within Quartz with spotty showings across the rest of the specimen with Galena and Sphalerite. Obtained in 1976 by Hampson.

The American Tunnel was dirven in 1959 to intersect the Sunnyside mine orebodies. The tunnel originated at the lower levels of the Gold King mine about a mile away. The complex is located about  seven miles northeat of Silverton at over 12,000ft. It is best known for its Fluorite on Rhodochrosite groups.

The more I look at this specimen the more I am impressed. If you are like me and enjoy the studying the paragenesis of the mineralogy, you will thoroughly enjoy this piece. The color of the Greenockite sets it apart from the rest of the minerals. It is a coating on the surface of the Sphalerite crystals which are black and superb to 3mm. In the open spaces, waterclear Quartz formed at the center and along the outer edges of the vein.

There are only a handful of reported Greenockite in Colorado. This specimen carries a Red Mountain Exploration tag.
