Rare Mineral Species of Langban & Harstigen, Sweden

Tuesday, 30 May 2017 06:30 PM

Somewhat kin to Franklin in terms of geology and mineralization, this area is also famous for its rare species. We will have some older material available. It's in short supply!

Deep red tiny prismatic crystals. The red can be seen within the Calcite as inclusions. Out of the Calcite the red is too dark to see. The longest crystal is 1mm and then there is one other outside of the Calcite. It is an old, historic specimen, with an old hand-written label, which indicates is from the Japan workings. There are Haussmanite crystals all over the matrix. There are also an unknown, acicular spray of crystals. Excellent old specimen.

Harstigen mine, Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden
Formula
Mn2+TiO3

Size
Chip < 1cm

Please note this is a Harstigen mine specimen. The label indicates that it is a portion of the type specimen from the British Museum. I acquired it from Dr. Georg Gebhard. This is a small 4mm specimen, but packs at least three minerals. The Pyrophanite crystals look pseudo-octahedral with triangular faces. There are deep red, micaceous looking plates that may be Dixenite, but could also be several other minerals. There are also colorless, acicular crystals. Interesting and potentially good specimen, but the identity needs verification since it is a "portion" of the type.
