Phosphate Rare Minerals for the Collector

Friday, 26 August 2016 12:00 PM

Primary and Metasomatic phosphates are found mostly in pegmatites, but also occur in many sedimentary deposits. Most of these phosphates look the same. We will attempt to unlock the mystery of these unique minerals which can often contain secondary phosphate minerals.

Barbosalite

#PD35935
Locality
Bull Moose mine, Custer Co., South Dakota, United States
Formula
Fe2+Fe3+2(PO4)2(OH)2

Size
7 x 5 x 4 cm - Sm Cabinet

Bluish-black mass with micro crystals less than 0.5mm in large open vug. There are some sulfides.

Barbosalite, although not considered a primary phosphate, it is a product alkali-leaching (metasomatism) of "reworked" Triphylite according to Moore (Min. Record, 1973). Barbosalite has often hosted superb crystals of Phosphossiderite and Strengite.

The Berlinite is the dirty white grey decayed zone inside the blue rims of Scorzalite,  Burangite and Trolleite. It is the The Al-P-analogue of Quartz. If viewed under the scope you will see formless colorless grains, which actually looks like Quartz.  I am not sure if that is the Berlinite or not.

This is the second world locality for this primary phosphate mineral found in a pegmatite. It is a simple Na-Mn iron phosphate with two distinct cleavages and one known parting. The parting surfaces can be seen as flashes of reflections when the sample is tilted back and forth and are yellowish or bronzy color. It is a granular mineral, dark green, much like alluaudite.

Bobfergusonite is a member of the Wyllieite group and is a Na-Mn-Fe phosphate. It forms nodules in pegmatites, much like most primary phosphates, a result of early crystallization and later altered by metasomatism while the remaining liquid cools and solidifies. It is remarkably similiar to Alluaudite. It is very rare and found in only two localities in the world.
