Large piece of black-brown compact Todorokite in plumose patterns with an old Ward's label that says this specimen is from the pre Castro days, which would be before approx. 1959.
We found an old 1944 USGS publication on the deposits of the Oriente Province online (email us for link if interested) with some facts about the Manganese mining in Cuba. In this paper it mentions that in 1941 the Sierra Maestra Mn district produced 75,000 to 90,000 tons of ore with 40% or more Mn and total known reserves estimated at 300,000 tons with 40% Mn.
