Mercury has not been mined in the USA since 1992 when the McDermitt mine in Nevada closed. It is now only produced as a by-product from gold-silver mines. Nonetheless, the USA is the leading exporter of mercury since it is still produced through secondary recovery programs and recycling. A 76 pound mercury "flask" averaged $550-650 in 2008 (USGS). At one time the USA had many mines namely in California. Terlingua, Texas had producing mercury mines. Terlinguaite, like this specimen, was a chief ore at Terlingua. This is an old Carleton Davis specimen with tag.
