Brown to purplish brown, lustrous, tabular crystals to 7mm. This is a great Axinite specimen with superb crystals. The original label with the specimen places the locality as Mt. Bischoff. I believe it is actually Colebrook based upon crystal forms and the association with Danburite, which are white to faint green crystals on the Axinite.

Once known simply as the mineral species, Betafite, now in a complex mineral group called the Betafite group, which belongs to the super group of Pyrochlores with a complicated nomenclature. Compositionally, Betafites are oxides of titanium and niobium with variable subtitutions of cations uranium and calcium in the A position and variable amounts of anions O, OH, H2O, or F in the Z position.

This is one of the best Betafites I have ever seen. There are several crystals in this cluster with the biggest at the base which is about 3cm across. The crystal perched on top is 1cm across.
