This is the best specimen of the lot in this update. The leaf is 1.7cm across and attached firmly to the Quartz matrix. A great thumbnail sized specimen which would still draw the eyes in any display case.

The "apex" of the Harvard mine was discovered in early 1850's and known as "Whisky Hill", probably since the prospectors drank alot of Whiskey after finding abundant Gold in the soils alone (on a Hill). The deposit was staked as a placer claim yet contained ore pockets containing 22 ounces per ton. Large scale mining began in 1899 and reached a depth of 1,866 feet by 1916 after producing 100,000 ounces of Gold.  (Ref. Min. Record 1987 v18 n1).

Rich little specimen loaded with stringer and leaf gold. The longest, continuously leaf Gold is 1.5cm. Excellent specimen.

It is a matter of speculation where the Gold originated in the Mother Lode. Some geologist, including Emmons (1937), thought the Gold was derived from the Sierra Nevada batholith and regional zonation of metals occured. The Mother Lode lies on the western edge of and near a "blunt finger" of the batholith. Further west Copper begins to occur with Gold.
