A small 9mm specimen of mostly black to dark brown Na-Ca-Mg-Fe phosphate with a resinous luster much like Griphite. Johnsomervilleite is terrestrially a very rare mineral found only in four pegmatites worldwide. The type locality in Scotland is a sillimanite-kyanite schist. The remaining four known localities are from meteorites. It probably is more common than the list implies.
