This is a very nice smaller miniature sized specimen of golden Baryte on Calcite from this famous and highly collectible locale in South Dakota! There are two slender golden-brown Baryte crystals, the largest of which is 4.5cm and is doubly terminated, set on matrix of honey colored Calcite.

Although, this specimen was originally posted as coming from Butte, it has come to our attention by a well-known locality expert, that the locality is actually Indian Head Rock, not Butte. These mistakes happen every now and then. Our knowledge for many of these minerals in this Special Edition was based on the Butte Mineralogical Record issue from 2002. According to our expert, even they got it wrong. Although we are not entirely convinced, we will rely on our expert's opinion. If any of you have other opinions, please let us know. We would love to hear from you. Thick tabular golden Barite encrusted over with possible Anglesite. Althought the side is cleaved off, it gives the viewer the opportunity see the rich golden color. See page 62 of Jenkins & Lorengo (Min. Record v. 33, n. 1 2002) for comparison.

The photos speak for themselves on this specimen. I liken it to a waterfall of blue baryte cascading over the edge. I can't imagine how this formed, other than under ideal conditions. The crystals are the most basic forms of Baryte which are tabular with slight elongations on the a or b axis with the sharp corner pointed parallel along the lines of formation but with a divergent habit. Look at the photo, you'll see what I mean. Incredible piece. No damage, sits nice with a light blue color with some frosted white areas.

White, elongated tabular crystals of Baryte to 4cm in a nice divergent group. Excellent specimen. The terminastions are lustrous and smoth as opposed to the remainder of the crystal which is a frosted white. There is one broken off crystal, which technically is on the back side opposite of the display side.

This is a large, heavy, very lusterous and impressive group of Baryte crystals. The crystals are pereferentially terminated with a brownish impurity. Excellent showy specimen with just a minor dign on the backside and considering how old and soft this specimen is, that is a minor miracle.
