Calcite pseudomorph after Glauberite with sharp, excellent, crystals with some of the best preserved forms I have seen of these specimens. Usually these are broken or scuffed up, but not this specimen. It is nearly perfect with no damage at all. It was purchased by Hampson in 1967.

This specimen is from an old miner's collection. Specifically it was collected from the 6850' main ledge at the Homestake. Specimens with this assembladge of minerals are termed "watercourse" minerals, which are Tertiary age open fracture systems sometimes with hot flowing water. It is a typical example with white Calcite rhombic crystals to 3mm, abundant 1mm cubic Pyrite crystals in 5mm clusters, tetrahedrons of black Sphalerite and dull octahedral crystals of pitted Galena. There my also be some Rutile.
As you know, Homestake was the largest producing underground gold mines in the US for quite a while. These days it is the national underground lab seeking dark matter.

A large second generation 4cm rhombic Calcite crystal on a previous Calcite growths. The specimen features a good phantom crystal (last photo) can be easily seen in person as a large scalenahedral crystal shooting up through the center of the larger rhombic crystal cap.
The area of Shullsburg, Lafayette County in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin contains numerous old mines and are a major part of Upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead district. This district covers areas in the neighboring states of Iowa and Illinois. Crystals such as these, common at one time, are very hard to obtain these days. Very minor scuffying on this specimen.
