This is an older specimen to which the original tag designated it as coming from the Leonard mine in Butte. It was also tagged as Smithsonite on the original label. It is without doubt blue botyroidal Hemimorphite based on hardness, reaction to HCl, and is visually identical to older Hemimorphite from the 79 mine. In addtion, after showing this specimen to a number of dealers in Tucson, the general consensus was the 79 mine. There are a few photos out there which compare well. One is in Min. Record's recent "Mineral Collections in Arizona" (2013) issue. On page 197 is a large blue botryoidal Hemimorphite from the Les and Paula Presmyk collection. The clincher however is on page 25 of the same issue from William Besse's collection. On Besse's specimen note the thickness of the Smithsonite and it's concentric habit. Also look at the matrix, it is a black sooty matrix with a lot of small holes. The characteristics of Besse's specimen are consistent and compares very well with this specimen. It's an excellent older specimen from the 79 mine and should rightfully belong to any serious Arizona collection.

A real well-trimmed excellent specimen of Hemimorphite from this locality. It is just perfect with a nice large open space filled with radial sprays of Hemimorphite crystals to 3mm positioned just right near the center and top of the limonitic matrix. There are also tiny 1mm bow-tie-like sprays of yellowish Mimetite.
