- Antique Specimen
Mass of dark steel-gray crystalline Acanthite on Dolomite matrix with pseudo-octohedral and curved wires to 4mm with an iridescent tarnish. This is quite a nice piece from the famous Freiberg district, but the incredible provenance makes it all the more appealing.
There are two antique labels that come with the piece and the oldest is an handwritten label from the collection of Carl Bosch (1874-1940), a Nobel Prize winning Chemical Engineer and passionate lifelong mineral collector. According to the MinRec Bio on Bosh, some 26 years after his death, the collection was sold to the Smithsonian in 1966, and indeed a U.S. National Museum Division of Mineralogy label also accompanies the piece with the corresponding catalog number 2188 on the back of the specimen.

A marvelous specimen with numerous cubo-octahedral, well-formed Acanthite crystals in singles and clusters from 2-3.5mm. This is simply a superb specimen not only for the region but also for its crystals.

This is a fantastic little specimen packed with micro crystals of the said minerals plus some other sulfides. The Acanthite exhibits a melted look of blebs of dull grey crystals. Pearceite is very possible as seen in the photo near the green arrow. The surprise was the gemmy, beautiful crystals of green Sphalerite to 2mm. The matrix is mostly Galena and Quartz. The old label states that it was mined at the 1200 foot level.
