Crocoite #DC24344
Berezovskoe, Ekaterinburg, Urals Region, Russia
Antique Specimen
Cooke Collection
Dana Locality
Type Locality
Chemical Formula: PbCrO4
Size: Cabinet

OLD-TIMER with an inked lettered label showing the locality. Though not by any stretch a handsome specimen, this piece could be historically significant. The Berezovskoe or Berezovsk Mines were the first primary gold deposits found in Russia and later yielded several type locality minerals including Crocoite, Vauquelinite, Aikinite, Cassedanneite, Embreyite and Phenicochroite. Cooke had this labeled as "Vauquelinite with Crocoite". I have my doubts about the ID of both as the Crocoite is more of the color of Phenicochroite and the Vauquelinite may be Pyromorphite. Indeed the the Crocoite may also be the rare lead chromate Cassedanneite. It should be analyzed. The matrix appears to have minute limonite after pyrite crystals. I am told by Pierre-Jacques Chiappero thet this specimen was in the collection Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle of Paris. Evidently the piece was acquired by them around 1840 from a Mr. Ravergie.

Overall: 10 x 3.5 x 3 cm
