The FAQ page - Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have more questions? Or did you not find what you are looking for? Please email us at inquiries@dakotamatrix.com and let us know.

Do you buy Collections?

Yes, we buy collections large and small. If you have a collection you not quite sure what to do with, give us a call (605) 718 - 9130 or email us at inquiries@dakotamatrix.com . We have purchased numerous collections and pay cash for them.

Do you take Minerals on Consignment?

Yes, we take minerals on consignment provided they "fit" our requirements at the time. We typically charge a 20 to 40% commission depending on the circumstance.

Can I Reserve a Mineral?

Yes, you may reserve up to two minerals for up to 48 hours. But this must be done through email. HOWEVER, someone may purchase this mineral before we get the chance to see your email and respond to it. We will try our hardest to "tag" your mineral with a "Reserve" label.

If I "Request Further Information" can it be sold before I get your response?

Your request will be delivered to us by email. It is virtually impossible for us to be continuously on the computer checking email. But, we'll certainly try our hardest to fulfill your request.

When I click the "Order" button, why do I only get one hour to complete my transaction?

When you click the order button this statement will appear:

"This item has been added to your shopping cart. To insure item availability, please complete your purchases and check out within 20 minutes. Thank you!"

Often times, after we update, we get a huge response and several customers will want the same specimen. We do not want to pressure anyone into making a purchase too quickly, but we also did not want anyone to click the "order" button and make that specimen unavailable to someone else if you walk away from your computer and forget about your order. Our website is set such that, once you click the "order" button it is marked "sold".  We felt that one hour is sufficient time to complete your browsing and ordering.

Do you Colorize your Minerals in your Photographs?

About 99% of my photographs are never run through a photo editor. The only time I will run it through a photo editor and edit the color is when the photo is much different than the real thing. I use a digital camera and with the right lighting and aperture setting, the color is  almost always true. If the photo does not match the color of the mineral, I will always mention this in my descriptions. Have you ever noticed that some minerals on other websites will be bright green or bright red? Often times, these photos are run through a photo editor to enhance their color. Look at the background of these photos and if you notice a slight color hue the same as  the mineral, this is a good indicator that the photo has been enhanced.

How do you take your photographs?

I use a Sony Mavica with Raynox macro lenses when necessary. I also use halogen Solux lights.

Do you ever have sales or give discounts?

Pricing minerals is about as subjective as it gets. Our pricing is very competitive to others and probably lower in most cases.  But we occasionally give discounts especially if we feel that we may have priced something a little to high. We will typically give discounts to customers in good standing who have done business with us for quite a while. It never hurts to ask! As far as sales go, visit our "Reduced" pages or our "Specials" pages for good deals.

Can I email an order?

Of course! Just like the old way of doing business with us. However, be warned that you may not get the specimen you want because our new system is set up to give priority to customers who use our order form and check out cart.

Do you send "On Approval"?

Yes - if you are a good standing customer with no outstanding balance. However this also depends on the mineral. We will not send a mineral out "On Approval" if the mineral is marked reduced, if it is under $50, if you are a first time customer, if it is a consignment mineral or it is fragile. You must also know that I will give preference to someone who unequivocally wants to buy it rather than to see it first. On this note though, you always have the right to return a mineral if you feel you do not like it after you purchased it. Please read our Return policy by clicking here.

Do you send mineral lists through the (snail) mail?

In the future I will. However not at this time.

Do you send substitutes?

Yes, if something is sold and if you wanted it and missed it, I may have a substitute. I will always ask if you want a substitute before I send one to you. So please ask if I have another of what you may have missed. My stock is extensive and I certainly cannot place it all on the website at once.

Do you declare all or any damages to a mineral?

Yes - certainly. I try my best to point out all flaws or damage. I may miss a slight blemish or a knick. Very few specimens are perfect and there is nothing wrong with a specimen with minor flaws especially when dealing with micro crystals. Take a close look at many of the specimens in museums and you will see minor flaws. Over $50 Gallery minerals you should expect little or no damage.

How are are your measurements taken on a specimen?

We use the metric system. Most specimens will be measured and given in centimeters (cm). When we give a dimension, such as 5 x 4 x 3cm this means it is 5 x 4cm across the main display face with a depth of 3cm.

Your elements in your descriptions are not in the order as they would appear in the mineral chemical formula - why is this?

It's the way our database is set up. We choose the main elements or compounds of interest in a mineral from a pick list. These are then given to you in alphabetical order, which of course is not the same order as they would be in a chemical formula of that mineral.

Do you take "want" lists?

All the time! Just send us your list and we will strive to find what you want!
